Congratulations to the 2012 Asian American Heroes of Colorado, featured in the May 2012 issue of Asian Avenue magazine.

This year’s heroes include:
Dr. DJ Ida - Executive Director of National Asian American Pacific Islander Mental Health Association
Sum Nguyen – President, Unified Vietnamese-American Council of Colorado
Dr. Suegie Park - Pharmacist and Health Professional in Asian refugee and immigrant communities
Dr. Jaime Alonso Yrastorza - Founder of Uplift Internationale

Young Asian American Hero Award:
Pakou Xiong,
Hmong community leader and Asian-American activist
Lifetime Achievement Award:
George Yoshida
, retired social worker and war veteran, Minoru Yasui Community Volunteer awardee

 

4th Annual Award Ceremony and Brunch
Date: Saturday, May 26th, 2011

Tickets: $20 adult/$15 student
The ceremony will include a dim sum brunch, recognition of 2012 Asian American Heroes of Colorado, acceptance speeches, acknowledgment of partnering AAPI organizations, and a commemorative video.

Asian American Heroes of announced!

The heroes were selected by a committee comprised of members from OCA Colorado, Asian Chamber of Commerce, Asian Avenue magazine, Mile-Hi Japanese American Citizens League, Colorado Asian Pacific Youth Association, Asian Pacific Development Center, Colorado Asian Culture and Education Network, and National Association of Asian American Professionals – Colorado.

[I]ndividual [D]iscovery – Colorado Asian American Leadership Conference

The conference intends to bring together Colorado high school students of diverse backgrounds, with a focus on Asian Americans, to address the cultural and societal issues within our community. Students will also have the opportunity to expand their skills and knowledge within these areas and network with students from across Colorado.

The theme of this year’s conference is self-realization, acceptance, and self-empowerment: [I]ndividual [D]iscovery. As future leaders of America, students will face many adversities along the way. Although we may struggle with our identities, through self-acceptance we can make great strides in the prevalent issues of today. The goal of the 2011 [I]ndividual [D]iscovery – Colorado Asian American Leadership Conference is to evoke an appreciation for the value of self-identification in order to empower the future leaders of our community. Our generation has the ability to become leaders in our own lives as well as come together as a community.

In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, the Colorado Asian Culture and Education Network (CACEN) and Colorado’s APA organizations, recognize Asian American Heroes of Colorado each May at the Asian American Heroes of Colorado Awards Ceremony. Each year, selected recipients of the Asian American Heroes of Colorado award recepients are highlighted in the cover story of Asian Avenue magazine and awarded a certificate from the Selection Committee, comprised of leaders from Colorado’s APA communities.
